Fifty thousand characters is about 8,000 words. That's how much DeepL will translate for free each month, and for plenty of people it's never a problem. The rest of this review is for everyone who hits that ceiling or needs to translate files, keep terminology consistent or share the tool with a team.
DeepL built its reputation on translations that read naturally, with the right tone and fewer stiff phrasings than older machine translators. It now sells far more than the translator: a writing assistant, real-time voice translation and tools for AI agents.

Enterprise is priced on request and sets custom character and file limits. Individual and Team can be tried free for 30 days. Annual billing saves about 16%.
For occasional emails and the odd paragraph, yes. The limits show up in three situations. You translate whole documents, which means files, and the free version allows just one a month. You need consistent terms, such as product names or legal phrases. Glossaries handle that, but on the free version and Individual they hold only five entries per language pair, against 1,000 on Team. Or you handle confidential text, where the paid plans' no-training promise matters.
Individual is the obvious step up for a freelancer or a student with a thesis. Team is built for organizations. Glossaries and style rules can be shared, and admins get usage analytics and single sign-on.
Think about files first, characters second. A freelancer who translates two or three contracts a month fits Individual's three file translations, as long as the documents stay within 300,000 characters. A marketing team localizing a newsletter and a few landing pages each week will outgrow that quickly and needs Team's 20 files per user.
Business makes sense when volume is unpredictable. Unlimited characters, 100 files per user and Write Pro included remove most of the arithmetic, at €49.99 per user a month on yearly billing. That's about €18 a month more per user than Team with the Write Pro add-on, so it pays off mainly for people who regularly run past Team's limits.
Write Pro edits text in the same language, which is useful when you write in a second language and want it to sound native. It fixes mistakes, adapts tone for a reader and suggests better phrasing. It costs €6.99 per user a month billed yearly as an add-on, and comes free with Business.
DeepL Voice translates speech in real time, and DeepL now says it can keep the sound of your own voice across languages. Every paid Translator plan includes 30 minutes of Voice per user each month. Larger voice needs are sold separately.
Developers buy DeepL through a separate API plan. DeepL is also pushing into agent workflows, pitching its translation as a tool that AI agents can call directly. For teams building multilingual products, that matters more than the web translator.
General assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude translate well too, and they can explain choices or rewrite for a market. DeepL's advantages are focus and control. It keeps a document's formatting intact and applies your glossaries every time. For one-off translations, an assistant you already pay for may be enough. For a team translating contracts, manuals or support content every week, DeepL's Team plan is easier to govern. Writers who mostly need polishing in one language might compare Write Pro with Grammarly.
