Claude and ChatGPT charge the same $20 for their main plan and cover much of the same ground: chat, file analysis, research, coding agents and projects. The differences show up at the edges. ChatGPT is the broader product, with image generation, voice, custom GPTs, a cheaper $8 tier and the more generous free plan. Claude is the narrower, deeper one, often preferred by writers and developers for long documents, careful prose and agentic coding through Claude Code.

Everyday use for most people: ChatGPT. The free plan is more generous, and $20 buys images, voice, deep research, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and Codex in one subscription.
Long-form writing and editing: Claude. Drafts need less rework, it keeps to a style guide, and it holds long documents in view.
Coding: close, with a slight edge to Claude for large refactors through Claude Code. Codex, included in every ChatGPT plan, is a real alternative.

ChatGPT prices in euros were €8 for Go, €23 for Plus and from €103 for Pro when we checked. Above $20 the lineups split. Claude Max sells five and twenty times Pro usage at $100 and $200, while ChatGPT Pro runs from $100 to a $500 tier added on September 29, 2026. The gaps are at the bottom, where ChatGPT has the richer free plan and an $8 tier, and at annual billing, where Claude Pro drops to $17 a month.
ChatGPT's free plan is the more useful one by a wide margin. Text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna are unlimited within abuse guardrails, and image generation, voice, deep research, uploads, memory and Codex are included in limited amounts. Its context window is small, 27,000 tokens for instant replies against 54,000 on Plus, and US users see ads.
Claude's free plan runs Sonnet and Haiku in limited sessions and resets on a rolling window, so a long working session hits the ceiling fast. It has no image generation and no Claude Code, but no ads either. For someone who uses AI a few times a day, both work; for someone who wants to rely on a free tool, ChatGPT is the one that holds up.
Writing is the reason many people choose Claude. Its drafts tend to sound less formulaic, and it keeps to a voice or style guide over long pieces. Handed a long contract, a book manuscript or a set of reports, it tracks detail across the whole document and answers questions about specific passages. Anthropic's Cowork app, included from Pro, extends that into multi-step work across many files.
ChatGPT is a capable writer too, and GPT-6 reasoning on Plus handles analysis well. Its advantage is range: it drafts, then makes the header image, reads the result aloud and schedules a follow-up task, all in one place. Its instant-reply context on Plus, 54,000 tokens, is modest, though reasoning models get 256,000 on Plus and 400,000 on Pro. For a writer whose output is text, Claude usually needs fewer rounds of editing; for a marketer whose output is text plus visuals, ChatGPT covers more of the job.
Both subscriptions now include a coding agent, and for many developers this is the deciding factor. Claude Code runs in the terminal and IDEs. It reads a repository and plans a change, then edits across files, runs the tests and fixes its own failures. It is included in Pro and Max, and developers who use it for hours a day are the main buyers of the $100 and $200 Max plans.
Codex is included with every ChatGPT plan, even Free in limited form, and shares its allowance with ChatGPT Work. OpenAI is more open about limits than Anthropic. It publishes estimated local messages per five-hour window for each model, such as 15 to 150 GPT-6 Sol messages on Plus and 70 to 700 on the $100 Pro tier. Anthropic describes Claude's limits only in relative terms.
For API work, Anthropic's models cost $1 to $10 per million input tokens, from Haiku 4.5 to Fable 5.1. Sonnet 5 sits at $2 input and $10 output. Editors such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot let you use models from both companies, which is another way to avoid choosing.
ChatGPT's $20 plan includes things Claude does not offer at any price. Image generation and editing is built in, with faster and unlimited creation on Pro. Voice conversations, including voice with video, work on phones and desktop. Custom GPTs and scheduled tasks round out the consumer product, along with a built-in browser and apps inside ChatGPT. Claude, focused on text and code, doesn't try to match it.
Claude's additions point the other way: Claude Code for software, Cowork for long knowledge-work tasks, projects for organizing documents, and connectors to work tools. If your idea of an assistant includes making pictures and talking out loud, ChatGPT is the only choice of the two.
Both plans have limits, and neither publishes a simple message count for chat. OpenAI marks Plus features as expanded rather than unlimited, and ties Codex to published per-model estimates. Anthropic says Max 5x and Max 20x give five and twenty times Pro's usage per session, with weekly limits on every paid plan, and publishes no absolute figures. The frequent complaint from Claude Pro users is hitting the limit mid-task during long coding sessions.
In practice, light and moderate users rarely hit either ceiling at $20. Heavy users of coding agents hit both, which is what the $100 tiers are for.
Both companies can use personal-plan conversations to improve their models, and both let you say no. ChatGPT's Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans use content for training unless you opt out in settings. Claude asks every Free, Pro and Max user to choose: allow it and Anthropic retains that data for up to five years, decline and standard 30-day retention applies. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise and Claude's Team and Enterprise plans do not train on customer data by default.
ChatGPT takes the verdict for most people because it does more for the same $20, and more for nothing. It has the stronger free plan and the $8 Go tier, plus image generation, voice and a wide set of everyday tools. Claude is the better choice for people whose work is writing, editing, long-document analysis or software. There, its output quality and Claude Code justify the subscription on their own.
