Claude vs Gemini in 2026: Google AI Pro bundles Gemini with 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Workspace for $19.99; Claude Pro is $20 for depth.
Claude and Gemini approach the $20 assistant from opposite directions. Anthropic sells Claude as a focused tool for thinking, writing and coding, with Claude Code and the Cowork app included from Pro. Google sells Gemini as part of Google AI plans that bundle storage, YouTube Premium Lite, video generation and AI inside Gmail and Docs. The question is less which chatbot is smarter than whether you want depth in a few tasks or AI spread across the Google services you already use.

Anyone living in Gmail, Docs and Android: Gemini. It works inside the apps where your email and documents already are.
Value for money: Gemini. Google AI Pro at $19.99 includes 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite, and Google AI Plus costs $4.99.
Long-form writing and editing: Claude, which holds a voice and structure across long documents and needs less rework.
Agentic coding: Claude, through Claude Code, with Google's Gemini CLI and Antigravity as credible free or bundled alternatives.
Images and video: Gemini, which generates both. Claude generates neither.

The two lineups mirror each other above the main plan, with both selling five- and twenty-times usage tiers at about $100 and $200. The difference is what comes attached. Claude's price covers the assistant and its agents. Google's covers the assistant plus storage, entertainment and home features that many households would otherwise pay for separately.
Google AI Pro is best understood as a Google One plan with AI on top. At $19.99 a month it includes 5 TB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos, YouTube Premium Lite for mostly ad-free videos, the standard Google Home Premium plan, and Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Vids. Someone already paying for 2 TB of storage and a YouTube subscription may find the AI costs almost nothing extra.
Workspace integration is the practical advantage. Gemini can summarize a long email thread in Gmail, draft a reply, rewrite a section of a Google Doc and pull information from your Drive files. It also accepts uploads of up to 1,500 pages, and Gemini Notebook, Google's research and writing assistant, gets higher limits on paid plans. Claude can reach Gmail, Calendar and Drive through its connectors, but it works from its own app rather than inside Google's.
Claude's reputation rests on writing and careful reasoning. It holds long documents in view, keeps a consistent voice across a report or chapter, follows detailed instructions and produces drafts that usually need less editing. Anthropic's Cowork app, included from Pro, runs multi-step tasks across many files, such as turning a folder of research into a structured report.
Gemini's writing is solid and improving, and its strengths are elsewhere: speed, breadth and access to Google Search for current information. Deep Research, available even on the free plan, produces cited reports from web sources, and Ultra adds Deep Think for the hardest reasoning problems. For a professional writer, Claude remains the safer choice; for someone who needs quick drafts inside Docs and answers grounded in Search, Gemini fits better.
Claude Code is one of the most widely used coding agents, running in the terminal and IDEs to plan, edit and test across a repository. It is included in Claude Pro and Max, and developers who run it most of the day are the main buyers of the Max plans.
Google's answer comes in several pieces. Gemini CLI is an open-source terminal agent, Gemini Code Assist is free for individual developers with a context window of 1 million tokens, and Antigravity is Google's agentic development platform, with base limits on Google AI Pro and higher ones on Ultra. Code Assist Standard and Enterprise cost $19 and $45 per user a month on annual commitments for companies. A developer on a tight budget can do real agentic work with Google's free tools, while one who wants the most capable agent tends to pay for Claude.
Editors such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot offer models from both companies, so choosing an editor does not lock you into either assistant.
Gemini's free plan is one of the most generous in AI. It includes Gemini 3.6 Flash with variable access to 3.1 Pro, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice conversations, Canvas, Gems, limited access to Google Flow for video and 15 GB of storage. Usage limits are based on compute, refresh every five hours and stop at a weekly cap.
Claude's free plan runs Sonnet and Haiku with session limits and has no image generation, no Claude Code and no Cowork. It is a way to try Claude's writing, not a tool to rely on daily. Students have an extra option on Google's side: when we checked, Google was advertising a free year of Google AI Plus for students, at least in some countries.
Gemini creates images and edits photos on every plan, and Plus and above add video generation through Google's Flow studio, with 200 credits on Plus, 1,000 on Pro and 10,000 or 25,000 on Ultra. Ultra also includes Project Genie for exploring interactive worlds generated by Genie 3. Claude reads images and documents you upload but does not generate images, video or audio.
If visual content is part of your work, Gemini covers it; with Claude you would add a separate tool, such as Midjourney for images or Veo, Google's video model, through another subscription.
Neither company publishes simple message counts. Google describes limits as multiples of the free plan, two times on Plus and four times on Pro, with Ultra up to twenty times Pro, refreshing every five hours up to a weekly limit, and lets you buy AI credits for more. Anthropic describes Max as five or twenty times Pro's usage, with weekly limits on all paid plans and no absolute figures.
On training, Claude asks Free, Pro and Max users to choose whether chats help improve models, with five-year retention if you allow it and 30 days if you decline. Google's Gemini apps have an activity setting that controls whether chats are saved and used to improve Google's services, with human review of some conversations. Both companies exclude business plans from training by default.
Gemini takes the verdict for most people because Google AI Pro delivers more for $19.99 than Claude Pro does for $20: an assistant with image and video generation, AI inside Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite, plus a $4.99 Plus plan and a stronger free tier. For anyone already inside Google's ecosystem, it is the easier choice.
Claude is the better tool for people whose work is writing, analysis of long documents or software development, where output quality and Claude Code matter more than a bundle. Partly. Claude's connectors can read from Google Workspace services such as Gmail, Calendar and Drive to answer questions and draft replies, but it works from its own app. Gemini runs inside Gmail, Docs and other Google apps, so it can summarize a thread or rewrite a paragraph where the text already is. For people who live in Workspace, that difference is the main reason to choose Gemini.

Plus doubles the free plan's usage limits, adds video generation with 200 Flow credits, puts Gemini in Gmail and Vids and includes 400 GB of storage, for about a quarter of the Pro price. Claude has nothing between Free and the $20 Pro plan, so for budget buyers Gemini is the only one of the two with a middle step.
