Jenni AI describes itself as "the AI workspace where researchers read, write, and cite", and the design follows from that. You start by building a library: drag in PDFs, sync a Zotero or Mendeley collection, or let Jenni search more than 200 million papers. Then you write in an editor where AI autocomplete suggests the next sentence grounded in those sources, with a citation attached that you can trace back to the paper.
Around the editor sit the other tools: an AI chat that answers questions about your document or specific PDFs, which you mention with an @, AI edits that rewrite a passage, reviews and workflow runs, version history, a browser extension and document publishing. Jenni says it is used by more than 5 million academics, and more than 6 million according to its homepage, with over 15 million papers written.
The pitch is writing alongside AI, with every claim traceable to a source. Where a general chatbot can invent references, Jenni ties suggestions to sources in your library, which makes it better suited to academic work, as long as you still check that each citation says what the sentence claims.

Every plan includes unlimited citations in more than 10,000 styles and library export in RIS, BibTeX and CSV. Prices are in US dollars, with local currencies shown in the app, and Jenni needs no credit card to start and lets you cancel at any time.
The free plan is enough to judge whether Jenni suits your writing, not to write a thesis. Ten autocompletes a day and five chat messages run out within a single session, and the body-only export means formatting must be redone elsewhere.
Plus covers most coursework and a steady writing schedule: 5,000 autocompletes a month is around 160 a day, and 500 chat messages and 500 edits leave room for revision. Its 500-page PDF limit handles long reports and most books. Pro makes sense for heavy users, such as doctoral students in their writing year or researchers producing several papers, who would otherwise watch the meters.
The billing choice matters more than the plan choice. At $30 a month, Plus billed monthly costs two and a half times its yearly rate, so a student who will write all year should pay yearly, while someone with one deadline can take a single month and cancel.
In August 2025 Jenni acquired ScholarAI, the research assistant known for one of the most popular academic tools in ChatGPT's GPT Store, and ScholarAI's founders joined Jenni. According to ScholarAI's website, its paper-search tools now power Jenni's research experience, and scholarai.io now points visitors to Jenni.

Academic integrity policies vary widely. Many universities allow AI for finding sources, brainstorming, outlining and editing, but not for producing text submitted as your own, and some require you to disclose any AI use. Detection tools such as GPTZero and Turnitin's AI checker are widely used by instructors, and their results can trigger reviews even when the work is legitimate.
Jenni's design, with sources and citations attached to suggestions, supports a responsible workflow: use it to find and organize literature, draft with suggestions you rewrite in your own words, and keep your library and version history as a record of how the work developed. The responsibility for following your institution's rules stays with you.
Paperpal is the better tool once a draft exists, with academic editing, plagiarism and AI checks, reference checks and journal fit inside Word, Google Docs and Overleaf. QuillBot is cheaper for paraphrasing and summarizing but does not manage sources. ChatGPT and Claude are more capable general writers, but without a source library they can suggest references that do not exist, which is a serious risk in academic work.
